Every time I go abroad I feel grateful to my parents for giving me the lessons of English from my early childhood. Nowadays I just cannot imagine life without that necessary skill.
When the issue of one universal language spoken worldwide is concerned, I can only say, that we have already had one - English. One can argue that we shouldnt be so prone to the influence of American culture, but all in all, he will have to admit , that it is easier to communicate in English than any other language, no matter where you go.
Do I like it? To be honest, I dont mind. Even though I prefer the melody of Spanish or French but I can do nothing more than accepting the fact.
Of course, I dont mean that we all should speak only English and give up our mother tongues. What I want to say, is that we can make use of that exploring the whole world.
Last summer holidays I visited three foreign countries: Spain, France and Israel. Even though I dont speak Spanish or French very well and I can hardly say a word in Hebrew, I had no problems with communication. All the waiters, shopkeepers, bus drivers and police officers I have met spoke English ass well as any ordinary passer-by.
We cant forget that there is a risk of the linguistic and cultural unification, but I believe that common use of English can only be a tool of discovering new lands, in order to explore their rich and unique cultural values.
